A neighbor called the other day. He was halfway through a turn with his blue 9480 when he went to turn back there was no steering. He stopped and tried his implement hydraulics and it was very noisy and jerky.
Hyd oil was right up. 2 separate systems. A vane pump on front of engine for steering and a piston pump on rear of accessory drive on cummins 855. We bled the steering pump and it started to work. Tried to bleed piston pump but no change. Very noisy and jerky. then steering stopped again. Seemed if you shut it off and and started it would work for a bit then quit.
A mechanic came out and pulled the piston pump to look at the accessory drive but it looked fine. He took both pumps off and took them to the shop yesterday.
He is going to drain the tank today and look at the strainers and intake.
As far as I can see these 2 systems are totally independent. The only common is the accessory drive on the engine and the reservoir. We changed the hyd filter but there is a bypass on the filter.
So far this is a real mystery! Any thoughts?
