fellow cover cropers, looking for ideas

I got some sandy dirt, really sandy, just started trying to get serious about cover cropping last year but I made a rookie mistake, I put seeded red clover in the day after harvesting this particular half section, needless to say I got a great catch and a great kill as soon as it hit my widematch and harmony express, whoops! Never crossed my mind, talking to my agronomist and dont get me wrong he is pretty talented was showing me a cocktail he thought I should try until I said this and that and that this will die, must recheck my lables before I make my picks plus what will fit my needs.

So I had a 45-50bu wheat crop hailed to nothing the year before and upon my mistake the phillups got me a great catch of spring wheat, no worries of mosaic or anything as flax was my next crop on the docket, it did amazing things for the soil but now I have run into a problem, the residue deteriorated extremely fast, way faster than normal, so fast it that while I was spraying fungicide today on the flax it looked like it had previously been summerfallowed, we are way ahead of normal on rain right now, over 22" when 13" for the year is average and the ground is getting packed like concrete.

So my original plan was since flax is farly late it would actually be harvested at what would be the start date for winter wheat so I figured this would be good thinking and next year I would likely get a better crop as it tends to dry up early, and I would have it harvested early enough to get a really good stand of sorghum sudan grass following it next year. My question is should I seed something with the winter wheat to help aleaviate the hard soil, would love to use radishes but I used spartan charge for the flax so brasicas are out of the question.

Looking for some ideas any opinions appreciated
