Is altendorf out of business?

I know for a fact altendorf filed for chapter 7 bankruptcy. It's printed in the news paper. Did they officially go out of business? I know they had a class action lawsuit against them from former employees, did that contribute? Their website is no longer up. If so that takes a lot of combines out of the run this year. May be some open acres.

mig welder gun

ive had a 255 lincoln mig welder for ever being that the shop is not always heated and the door stays open often and often i weld rusty metal in adverse conditions the original gun was short and had poor feeding problems bought a tregasskiss gun that was recommended and it was longer and a lot larger it had feeding problems as well this older mig has a single feed roller (with a bearing clamped against it) and with any restriction on the feed (rust ,kinked or coiled gun lead, etc) the gun was too large and cumbersome and the large piece of metal that finished the line and tube was a blessing i bought a smaller more size of original, cmi gun and lead (bernard knockoff?) and put the benard Centerfire nozzle adapter on and it has been a way better setup for my imperfect conditions anyone else tinkered and fine tuned their mig think i should replace roller as well any tips you have discovered?

farm toys ain't what they used to be

I have been farming the living room with my 5 year old son today when we decided we needed more stuff. after digging around a while in the attic I found what he consider the jack pot! if you have tried to buy new toys you know you can't build a complete line of equipment, all different scale, style of hitches or high detail and have to be left on the shelf. The old stuff we found in the attic you can turn the steering wheels, the headers on the combines change and the reels move when you roll them, the beaters on the manure spreader turns, working grain augers, pick up reels on balers the list goes on the point is if you ever seen a kid play with this it is amazing to see how interest they become in how it works. now my 9 year old daughter has put her kindle down to help plant the living room. If we would put a little bit more pride in our work (regardless of what we do) maybe it would not be so hard to get the next generation to work

dynaflex without lateral tilt?

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with putting a dynaflex on R series without lateral tilt? Bought a 35' and going to put it on a 06 R65 but seem to have a issue with feeder chain touching the center auger, front chain is brand new and still has offset links in it but there isn't enough travel to shorten it yet. Does the lateral tilt have to be used just to create enough room for the feed chain? The operating and service manuals make no reference to needing tilt.

Who do people follow? I get reports from Bill Helming in Olathe, KS anyone else get his? He's been pretty bang on in his career for depression/recession predictions. Looking gloomy from 2015-2021 his last one says. Talking about farmers giving up land in Iowa and such.... Figures oil will bottom at 20-30 before it goes up. Autosteer screen/display

Hi everyone,

This may sound odd but does anyone still make a screen/display for doing just Autosteer? I'm currently running an Autofarm a5 on rtk and I like it because it is simple and easy to operate. Is also good for my dad to use. I mean how can it be? Hit the big green button that says GO!

My airseeder is ground drive with infinitely variable gearboxes and manual adjustments. I move my boom spray controller between tractors so I don't want to incorporate it into the Autosteer display.

Any help would be great.

Rent walkouts point to strains in U.S. farm economy

(Reuters) - Across the U.S. Midwest, the plunge in grain prices to near four-year lows is pitting landowners determined to sustain rental incomes against farmer tenants worried about making rent payments because their revenues are squeezed.

Some grain farmers already see the burden as too big. They are taking an extreme step, one not widely seen since the 1980s: breaching lease contracts, reducing how much land they will sow this spring and risking years-long legal battles with landlords.

The tensions add to other signs the agricultural boom that the U.S. grain farming sector has enjoyed for a decade is over. On Friday, tractor maker John Deere cut its profit forecast citing falling sales caused by lower farm income and grain prices.

Many rent payments – which vary from a few thousand dollars for a tiny farm to millions for a major operation – are due on March 1, just weeks after the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) estimated net farm income, which peaked at $129 billion in 2013, could slide by almost a third this year to $74 billion.

The costs of inputs, such as fertilizer and seeds, are remaining stubbornly high, the strong dollar is souring exports and grain prices are expected to stay low.

How many people are walking away from leases they had committed to is not known. In Iowa, the nation's top corn and soybean producer, one real estate expert says that out of the estimated 100,000 farmland leases in the state, 1,000 or more could be breached by this spring.

The stakes are high because huge swaths of agricultural land are leased: As of 2012, in the majority of counties in the Midwest Corn Belt and the grain-growing Plains, at least 40 percent of farmland was leased or rented out, USDA data shows.

"It's hard to know where the bottom is on this," said David Miller, Iowa Farm Bureau's director of research and commodity services.

SIGNS OF TROUBLE

Grain production is, however, unlikely to be affected in any major way yet as landowners will rather have someone working their land, even at reduced rates, than let it lie fallow.

But prolonged weakness in the farm economy could send ripples far and wide: as farms consolidate, "there would be fewer machinery dealers, fewer elevators, and so-on through the rural economy," said Craig Dobbins, professor of agricultural economics at Purdue University.

Possibly also fewer new farmers.

Jon Sparks farms about 1,400 acres of family land and rented ground in Indiana. His nephew wants to return to work on the farm but margins are tight and land rents high. Sparks cannot make it work financially.

"We can't grow without overextending ourselves," Sparks said. "I don't know what to do."

Landowners are reluctant to cut rents. Some are retirees who partly rely on the rental income from the land they once farmed, and the rising number of realty investors want to maintain returns. Landlords have also seen tenants spend on new machinery and buildings during the boom and feel renters should still be able to afford lease payments.

"As cash rent collections start this spring, I expect to see more farm operators who have had difficulty acquiring adequate financing either let leases go or try and renegotiate terms," said Jim Farrell, president of Farmers National Co, which manages about 4,900 farms across 24 states for land-owners.

Take an 80-acre (32 hectare) farm in Madison County, Iowa, owned by a client of Peoples Company, a farmland manager. The farmer who rented the land at $375 an acre last year offered $315 for this year, said Steve Bruere, president of the company. The owner turned him down, and rented it to a neighbor for $325 -- plus a hefty bonus if gross income tops $750.

There are growing numbers of other examples. Miller, of the Iowa Farm Bureau, said he learned about a farmer near Marshalltown, in central Iowa, who had walked away from 650 acres (263 hectares) of crop ground because he could not pay the rent. Just days later, he was told a north-central Iowa farmer breached his lease on 6,500 acres.

COURTS OR LOANS

Concern about broken leases has some landlords reviewing legal options, according to Roger A. McEowen, director of the Iowa State University Center for Agricultural Law and Taxation. His staff began fielding phone calls from nervous landowners last autumn.

One catch is that many landlords never thought to file the paperwork to put a lien on their tenants' assets. That means landowners "can't go grab anything off the farm if the tenant doesn't pay," McEowen said. "It also means that they're going to be behind the bank."

Still, farmers could have a tough time walking away from their leases, said Kelvin Leibold, a farm management specialist at Iowa State University extension.

"People want their money. They want to get paid. I expect we will see some cases going to court over this," he added.

To avoid such a scenario, farmers have begun turning to banks for loans that will help fund operations and conserve their cash. Operating loans for farmers jumped 37 percent in the fourth quarter of 2014 over a year ago to $54 billion, according to survey-based estimates in the Kansas City Federal Reserve bank's latest Agricultural Finance Databook.

Loans with an undefined purpose -- which might be used for rents, according to the bank's assistant vice-president Nathan Kauffman -- nearly doubled in the fourth quarter of 2014 from a year earlier to $25 billion.

Total non-real estate farm loan volumes jumped more than 50 percent for the quarter, to $112 billion.

"It's all about working capital and bankers are stressing working capital," said Sam Miller, managing director of agricultural banking at BMO Harris Bank. "Liquidity has tightened up considerably in the last year."

"Right to Farm" legislation Indiana

Such "Right to Farm" legislation is praised by national farming advocates who say it ensures future state lawmakers won't pass laws that unnecessarily burden farming. They say such legislation provides protections from what they consider to be bogus legal challenges pushed by animal welfare groups, such as the Humane Society of the United States.

"Their interest isn't necessarily protecting the public from animal agriculture," said Dale Moore, executive director of public policy for the American Farm Bureau Federation. "It's in shutting down animal agriculture."

But environmental and animal-welfare organizations see things differently. They call Steele's amendment and others like it "The Right to Harm." They say such legislation places international corporate farming interests over the rights of average Hoosiers to have food produced in humane ways without mucking up the environment from factory farms.

Kim Ferraro, a lawyer with the Hoosier Environmental Council, questions why the bill is needed at all. She says lawmakers have already passed two right-to-farm statutes, including the one last year, so why add further protections?

Plus, she questions whether farmers are really under threat as they like to claim.

INDIANAPOLIS STAR

Indiana too lax on livestock manure ponds?

"You hear them say ag is under attack, yet two weeks ago I was invited to attend the governor's inaugural agricultural conference, and I was sitting in a room with over 400 people from the biggest multinational corporations — Cargill, Monsanto, huge, huge companies — all boasting about how Indiana is a global leader, how the industry is making billions. I mean it's like where is the disconnect?"

The Indiana Farm Bureau says it's neutral on Steele's resolution.

In a prepared statement, the powerful state lobbying organization thanked Steele for helping pass bills last year that ensured right-to-farm protections and also expanded criminal trespass laws on farm property.

"We believe that the laws Sen. Steele championed last year provide sufficient protection for agriculture," said Indiana Farm Bureau spokesman Andy Dietrick.

Steele didn't return repeated inquiries left with his press secretary this week.

Aside from support from agricultural groups, right-to-farm legislation has been advocated by the American Legislative Exchange Council, a conservative group that works with business interests to draft "model policies" for state lawmakers to pass. The draft bills and resolutions support the group's free-market, small-government federalist principles.

ALEC's practice of crafting bills for legislators has been criticized by liberal and some open-government groups.

Whether driven by ALEC or not, such legislation has been widely popular.

INDIANAPOLIS STAR

Is ag bill a 'bunch of crap'?

Over the years, all 50 states have some sort of right-to-farm legal protections for farmers, primarily against nuisance suits.

But that's not been enough for some statehouses in recent years.

Last August, Missouri voters narrowly passed a constitutional amendment similar to Steele's. A right-to-farm amendment also has been introduced this year in Kentucky.

Steele's resolution is scheduled to be discussed Monday during the Senate's Agricultural Committee hearing at 10 a.m. in Room 130 at the State Capitol, 200 W. Washington St.

Constitutional amendments need to be passed by the General Assembly for two consecutive years before going before the voters.

Lexion HHS setup

Looking for insight into best aps/concave setup for my crops. Crops: wheat/hrsw some is Glenn (which is very hard threashing), canola, peas, soybeans, corn, and pintos (obviously fragile). I have a new to me lexion 760tt that came with a round bar main concave. Thinking I would like/need to change. Interested in going to a HHS that has the interchangeable concave pieces. I need to call him and see what he thinks also just looking for some heads up insight. Looks like it would be half round and then you could add wheat aps to front and wheat aps to the concave for wheat. For corn it could be all rounds? How about for soybeans, canola and pintos ? Also is the wheat setup going to be aggressive enough for Glenn?

Soybeans and wheat aps plates look the same?

HHS impeller wear kit as good as any?

Most of the time crop is fairly dry, with exception of some high moisture corn for feedlot.

Pea/oat mixed production

Hello everyone,

Have been wondering a little about what growing a mixture of oats and peas for grain production would be like.

Has anyone tried it? Any idea what the yields were for each crop once separated? And how hard was it to separate?

I am already growing oats but always thought this could be an interesting combo. Would have to be worth it financially, obviously.

Tractor/manure tank pairing

We are looking to purchase a Houle 9500 liquid manure tank, w/ steerable quad axles, and pull it with our JD 8450 4WD. All our land is flat so wieght ratio, tractor to spreader, is less of an issue. Biggest concern would be bogging down in soft ground and not having the power to pull through. Thoughts?

Micro-Trak Electric Motor Driver (EMD)

We currently run a double electric liquid fertilizer pump set up on the smaller of our 2 liquid carts (ground drive on the other). We are running the set up with a Spray Mate II but without the butterfly valve installed. This would have been the ideal way to make it auto rate but with the auto pressure shut off safeties built into the pumps just fight the valve and surge. Valve closes when you slow down, pressure increases, pump senses too high pressure and shuts off, flow falls below set rate, butterfly opens to increase rate, pumps kick back on, and so on in a viscous circle.

Cart is used exclusively for starter fert, basically straight 10-34-0-0 with a few micros when needed. Have been only putting on min P past 12 years, recently bought the land (was renting same stuff before) so having pumps full out and "over applying" a nutrient I almost can't ever loose wasn't a big deal (pumps max out at 50 lbs/ ac P2O5)

Now want to build system so that full auto rate is possible. Mico-Trak makes a EMD (electric motor driver) that varies the DC voltage to achieve a speed adjusted rate on electric pumps. Apparently ties directly into the existing Spay Mate II controller and harness.

Does anyone have any feedback on the performance of this set up?

Thanks

Any problems? We hadn't planned on getting it with the new cart but NH had a good year end deal on carts and the only carts with variable drive (which we wanted) had the deluxe auger. Just hoping all the electronics that go with the auger won't end up being a pain in the ass. If it works like they say I think it will work pretty slick. I am planning on getting remote openers for the trailer so it should be a one man show for loading this year.

Proposed highway through farm

Hi everyone,

So I have a meeting with main roads Western Australia tomorrow about a major highway which will bypass the small town of Northampton. My main farm that I live on is just north of town.

So 18 years ago my parents managed to stop it by getting a petition together with town residents worried that it will kill the town, as many businesses benefit strongly from tourists. Also, it cuts some of my paddocks up into pieces, and passes bloody close to my house and sheds. I am the main farmer affected as 3 of the 5 kilometres of it pass through my property, the remaining length being residential.

Has anyone ever been in the same situation? In recent cases farmers are being paid terrible money for the land taken.

Some of it is actually heritage listed as there are old copper mines from WW1 era, along with the foundations of some of the first buildings in the town, but that doesn't seem to phase them.

Has anyone heard of substantial things that block something like this? It's going to cost me money long term, and make 3 paddocks, about 10 tiny ones. It's also a pain because I do 2km long runs when spraying in the biggest paddock it goes through :( which will be halved.

Estimated cost is $110 million Australian dollars. With proposed construction from 2017-18. It is being given federal funding, which is worrying.

Reason for the bypass is literally 200m of road that passes through town, which has a bend in the middle, which triple trailer road trains have a tight squeeze going around. Because of the verandah of the newsagents.

My local shire has tried to sneak it through before without letting land owners know until all plans were done, and we are trying to make sure that doesn't happen. I was tipped off by a friend who heard from inside the shIre.

Any suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated as this farm has been in my family's name for 140 years, and we are ready for a fight. and no one wants to lose land.

Final plans have not been finished, but meeting will discuss where exactly we want it to go, but we'll try and block it first.

Cheers.

Chopper vs. spreader

I've had a couple of my custom guys mention that they'd like to see a chopper on my combine, I don't THINK that they would pull their acres from me because I don't have one but in this day and age a guy can never tell. I don't know much about choppers because I've never run one. I went from an 8820 Titan 2 to a S670 a year ago. It was a big enough challenge to learn all the ins and outs of the drastic jump in combines, now I have this facing me. What are the pros and cons of a chopper vs. a spreader? Is this an odd comment or is this a true preference across the board?

Thanks

Gleaner G for Camelina seed?

Does anyone know what the basic settings would be on a Gleaner G for harvesting Camelina seed? My understanding is that it is about the same as Alfalfa seed. My Owner's manual has settings for Alfalfa, but Camelina has very wiry solid stalks and the seeds are very tiny. I got nothing out of my test crop last year because of a severe nitrogen deficiency. The last time I cleared trees and planted the ground everything grew like crazy, but not this time! Since I had never run a combine I just drove around the small field and cut down what was there just to get a feel for running the machine. The stalks did not clear out of the back very well, but I suspect my fan speed was too low. I was trying to collect what few seeds may have been there so had the fan speed low. I think a much higher fan speed would move the stalks better, but am concerned that the seeds (when I have some) will just go right out the back. I know there are some sort of "air doors" that cut the air flow at the back to help allow light seeds to fall out of the chaff and through the sieve. Can anyone help me out with this? I want to have whatever is necessary on hand to harvest properly when the time comes next summer. I just don't know for sure what to get. I have the adjustable chaffer and adjustable sieve.

Started My MX 285 this afternoon after it had sat in the shed for quite awhile in the cold with out being started. We did plug in the block heater the evening before though. The battery was dead when we tried to start it, so we jumped it and got it started. We let it warm up for a half an hour to an hour before trying anything. When we went to go it wouldn't move. Upon further inspection all hydraulic functions were dead. Any thoughts on where I could start looking? Thanks in advance for the help. A couple of codes that came up were 00147 00077.

875-21 landoll

Looking at buying a 875-21 landoll tilloll. We have an Agco RT140A tractor. Not had it on dyno but they are supposed to have around 170 hp. Old rule of thumb is 10hp/ft which we don't have but we could chip the tractor. Not weighed the tractor yet but think it could weigh around 15,500. It has a loader and I am factoring that into my guesstimate on weight. Like to have an 18 footer but can't find one of those in our budget right now but have found a good older 21 foot. We won't be using it for heavy tillage. Just working water ways and a few acres each year. Opinions?

Diff. Btw. R75 and r76?

I was wondering what differences there are btw. A 2007 r85 with 14" unload and my 2009 r76? The r76 has the larger capacity clean grain system but are there any more important differences? I don't do a lot of corn so clean grainn capacity isn't very important. Other question what is a 2007 r75 worth with 700 seperator hours? Condition is average to above average, no rwa, with yield monitor, non variable speed feeder house. I'm looking into one as a second machine to replace my 96' r72. So if it works out I have a pretty hot r72 for sale, lol. All hyperizing work done by Dan Hurtt.

Jd 1860 boots

In the process of changing the boots on my1860.from what I have been told the two piece boot would be better replaced by the one piece 1890 boot. Is this possible and do I need to modify them in any way to work as intended. Have heard that the seed tubes may need changing to the newer style to fit is this true. Local dealer was little help on the conversion. Hoping to hear from anyone that has done this and was it worthwhile. Thanks

Lexion weight distribution

Have a 760tt and was curious if anybody knows what the weight distribution between the front and rear axles would be? All I can find online is the total weight of 49,750. We picked up the 16r30 drago for the first time today just to reposition on header trailer ( and to prove to the old man the combine could pick it lol). Now the old man believes it can pick it, but is sure the rearend is light, since the rear tires aren't squating. I drove around yard and rear end doesn't feel lite, even after sliding on ice and slowing down quickly after hitting gravel (tracks snow/ice don't mix). I'm GUESSING the rear axle is carrying around 40% with no header on, so even after picking header which weighs 11,000 lbs. the rear axles should still have decent weight on it.

AFSC bushel weights

I came across this info from AFSC when they measured my bins this winter. According to them, AFSC has changed the bushel weight standards for barley from 48 to 50 pounds, and oats from 34 to 41 pounds per bushel. I haven't talked to anyone else that has heard this. How does this affect us? If we measured everything in tonnes it shouldn't, but why would they change?

Just wondering how many people out there have #3 or better durum yet to sell. Grain buyers keep telling me that there is lot's and the prices are just going to keep sliding until new crop. Getting rid of Badgers?

Anyone have any ideas as to how to get rid of the buggers! They have moved in on a new hay field and are making a mess. They have been quit active this winter, but at the same time you never see them during the daylight hours. Therefore don't get many opportunities to use the lead slinger on them! There even digging up canola stubble on the other side of the fence were there hasn't been a gopher of mole to speak of?

Cracks in concrete floor

Building a new workshop, had part of it concreted a few weeks ago. The guys did a very nice job and have a nice 70'x40' slab to start with. I was disapointed to see the other day that a crack was starting to form from one of the end wall posts and is already out 2m into floor and is also branching out in 2 directions. I know with concrete its luck of the draw but still disapointing to see.

We had good weather when it was done but did get some late afternoon sun as the doors aren't on yet, job was all but finished by then though. The apron across the front of the shed for the door track has about 8 cracks across it and hasn't even been driven on yet.

Could we have done anything different or is that just concrete?

Our old shop at my Dads was concreted 30 years ago and doesn't have a crack anywhere.

Paired row packers for Contour Drill

What type of press wheel/packer tyres are being used for paired rows?Tried Rootboots last year on a C1 Contour drill with the 4.8" flat surface tyres which tended to leave a wide flat bottomed trench, not good on some of our poorly drained red soils.

I am thinking a wedge profile tyre that would give me more of a side press rather than all above the seed zone would be beneficial but am worried if I go too narrow the wheel may not have the flotation and so pressure will increase, may lose depth consistency also.

Welcome any thoughts,ideas.

3406 cat fuel shut off solenoid problem

Does anyone have a picture/diagram showing where I would find the fuel shut off solenoid on a Cat 3406A as mounted in series 3 steiger. It has recently started playing up...i.e. the engine will not shut off when the engine stop button is depressed. I have heard that it can be overrode manually by using a pair of visegrips to move the plunger rod.

Concord openers, Dutch, Gen, AtomJet, Farmland

I'm debating changing my openers on my 12" spacing, 4 rank, edge on shank concord drill. I currently have 7"Farmland Chrome sweeps with a back swept knife for the dry and nh3 (all sweeps and knives are in great shape).

I have several issues with my current setup

1) its rough as heck (because the sweeps are wider than the packer tires?)

2) I have quite a bit of nh3 gassing off at times (I may switch to banding the nh3 separately)

3) soil doesn't seem to flow around and cover the seed consistently, the coverage is mainly from soil getting flung over from the other shanks

4) I'm limited to about 4.5 mph to do a good job of placement with canola, any faster and the flying soil buries some to deep. It had disc levelers when I got it but they were pretty rough and a big problem in heavy straw so I pulled them off. (straw clearance is great now)

The cheapest would be to go to a 4" Farmland chrome sweep, I would still have my nh3 problem though and if soil doesn't flow around and cover it wouldn't throw far enough from neighboring shanks to cover.

Will the field finish be much better with Atom Jet or Dutch? Or is the the concord packer design?

I've read that the Gen 300 openers are pretty good in wet conditions (plugging the seed opening) and soil flows around covering the seed vs flinging shank to shank, should let me pick up my speed a bit? They are also pretty affordable compared to the dutch/atom jet options (unless they don't work).

The Gen are 157/shank with nose carbide or 203 with full carbide and the Atom Jet or Dutch are another 100 opener. I like to save money but really need to do it right this time. Anybody else still seeding with one of these dinosaurs?

Thanks

TJ425 offline

I have a 2002 TJ425 that is having issues and I'm wondering if anyone on here can help me out. Basically the tractor will be running fine and suddenly everything quits except the engine. The hydraulics and electrical both stop working and the message on the corner post is "tractor offline". If I shut down the tractor and wait a while then start it again it will work. Sometimes it keeps working all day, sometimes it will shut down again in 5 minutes. I called my dealer and they of course told me they had never heard of the problem. I have a hard time believing that I am the only one to have this problem so that's why I come to you guys. The tractor will also give me close to ten different fault codes which I can provide if someone wants to see them. I could live with the problem in fall while I was ditching but for seeding I need to have this fixed. Thanks in advance.

Maybe it is time for me to quit farming

Well here is an article that according to Agriculture Canada, Farmers are making money hand over fist, right in the first line. I guess i am one of the clueless that doesn't know the trade secrets on how to be super wealthy farming. I wonder if this will influence any price increases, i am seriously thinking it is time for me to hang it all up and pursue something else. Because i have no clue what the heck they are talking about, or where they are getting there stats.

Corn/Soy setup for 760

I am digging into our 760 combine that is new to me this winter and am wondering what the best setup should be for corn and soybeans. My combine has a roundbar concave and the aps preconcave segments are the 19mm by 40mm listed as a Maize segment. Is this suitable for Soybeans. Currently installing the impeller wear kit for green stems. Notice some folks recommend a rotor flow kit, is that for older machines or is this something i should consider for this machine. Also noticed that when i was removing the aps preconcave segment there was lots of material wedged at the back where segment tucks under the front of the concave. Is this normal? Looks like the bar that the segment is under is raised a bit thereby creating a bump for material to hop over to get into concave as opposed to a smooth flow. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Vario heads

Just wanting some feedback from people that have run the bigger Vario's 1200- 1230's especially if you have also used a draper head beside one for comparison. I am just toying with the Vario idea we harvest sorghum and mungbeans for our summer crops and wheat, barley, canola & chickpeas as winter crops, the issue I have had in the past with tin fronts has been in light crops getting them to feed from the knife to the intake auger without bunching up and slugging, but my idea is to run an AWS air reel in conjunction with the original pick up reel to eliminate this issue, and also having a front that talks to the combine as far as ground following goes with the electronics side tilt and ground pressure sensing it should be able to shave the ground very well (we harvest very flat ground here), would I be correct in saying that? In heavy bulky crops I would have said the Vario would be no worse than a draper, they certainly seem to be able to feed wheat and canola well in any U tube clip I have seen

Running Oats Through a Rotary Gleaner Question

I would like some advice as to how I can clean up my sample when running oats through my R50. Here's the situation:

It's a 88' R50 with the standard chaffer and sieve. It does not have the option of return to cylinder on the returns, only back to the accelerator rolls.

Last year was the first year for the R50 in oats. I ran with the book settings and I left the filler bars (3) in the concave as I had previously done wheat. I "tweeked" the settings a little as I went along to minimize rotor and shoe loss.

I think I'm getting too many little pieces of straw in the grain tank. I'm afraid to turn the wind up too high for fear of blowing oats over the shoe. Would it help any if I took out the filler bars? Would a perforated finishing sieve clean up my sample?

Any insight anyone who runs oats through their rotary Gleaner would be appreciated.

Thanks, Tom K.

HRSW Seed test results - high fuzz

Has anyone cleaned their wheat and had it tested yet? How high of fuzz are you guys willing to seed? I have carberry which I saved and liked to seed but it came back as 12.5% which is obviously high, 80% germ. I'm not sure if that's a disaster waiting to happen or what??? I cleaned enough to seed at a higher rate. We've had fuzz in the area for 4 seasons so I don't think it matters at this point, weather being the biggest factor. But interested to know other thoughts. Towing equipment with a pick-up truck

My general question is: Where do you draw the line with towing farm equipment behind a pick-up truck?

The reason for the question is, today I saw a pick-up towing a 57' Flexicoil air drill and a 2340 tow behind cart down one of the busiest 2 lane highways in the province. I'd guess the cart and drill weighs 30,000lbs, it just seemed a bit sketchy to me. I might try something like that for a mile or two on a backroad but never on a highway.

Seeding with 2 Air tanks

Just been thinking about buying a second air tank... Priced out a 550 John Deere 1910 cart but really dislike the tank configuration for seeding Canola. I'm thinking if I can pick up a tow between for a fraction of the price and be able to use one tank specifically for urea and use our tow behind for what we use it for now. Has anyone done this? JD 7730 ATR autosteer options

Hi everyone,

I'm in the process of looking at buying a ATR Deere 7730 but doesn't come with jd screen or receiver. I'm currently running an Autofarm A5 on RTK on my new holland tm190 which I'm in the process of selling. The big question is do I stick with an Autofarm/Agleader system (either geosteer or paradyme) or sell my Autofarm base station, receiver and screen with the tractor and swap over to a greenstar system. I'm led to believe that a geosteer/paradyme will still work with my A5 base but would limit the use of glonass.

I really like the repeatability of the Autofarm and the simplicity of the A5 (not to mention the fact dad can get in and use it as well) but I think regardless of which way I go it will involve an extra layer or complexity. I sow about 500ac of cereal crops and Perrenial/annual pastures each year. Plus about 1000ac of spraying plus cultivation work.

The only reason I went rtk originally was I got a really cheap deal when I bought the Autofarm a5. I don't think I need to go a paradyme system because I'm not doing vegetables or row crop work, I'm all broadacre but if someone thinks it's worth the extra money on top of a geosteer/ greenstar system I would consider it.

If anyone can help with some indicative pricing on the following it would be great.

A geosteer/integra or versa with a kit to steer an ATR 7730 (I'm pretty sure it's not using CANBUS so no jd unlocks)

A gs 2600 or 2630 with gs receiver with all the necessary unlocks to steer a 7730.

I'm not sure about putting a Trimble or topcon systems in, I've never had anything to do with either system but not confident with mixing colours.

At the moment I'm not looking to control my sprayer and my old jd 777 air cart is ground drive with infinitely variable gearboxes so I'm not going to be doing VR any time soon. It's mainly steering I'm after but if it can interface with ccd cameras it would be an advantage. I'd like to be able to shift the receiver and screen to another tractor and then use it just as a light bar and maybe adding an ATU or on trac system down the track for harrowing/rolling and maybe even spraying with a linkage sprayer.

Any help/advice/comments or suggestions is appreciated

Cheers

Differences in air flow between 60 series and 70 series

I am wondering what the differences were between a 60 series STS and a 70 series with the cleaning fan and/or air flow system. It seems to us that combining beside a 9770 with our 9760 in canola that the 9770 will do a cleaner job. Is there a way to update a 60 series to be like a 70 series?

970 Case with cracked cyl. liner ??

Hey anyone with experience on these old tractors?

All of a sudden last week our old 970 while running a grain vac cracked a liner, filled the crankcase with coolant and got hot. Pulled the pan and found it leaking on #6, pulled liner, found it cracked down by the bottom around the top O ring slot. Now these are aftermarket parts I put in about 9 years ago with only about 1100hrs on. The tractor has ran fine for years and its doesn't get worked to hard anymore. Just wondering what the cause maybe, or if its just a faulty part. Case dealer tells me I should have used an OEM over haul kit:D! Says he's seen them break on the bottom but not very often. Typically if they crack its at the top of the liner or they get ate out from age (poor antifreeze) on old ones etc.

Degelman Pro-Till in pasture land

Has anyone used the pro-till in hay/grass land?? Wanting to break up about a half section of pasture land this spring before going in there with the drill. It's fairly rough in there as the hay stand(mostly crested wheat now with a little alfalfa) is close to 20 years old. Have quite a few gopher/badger holes as well. The land is on the lighter side. Would've liked to sprayed it out last fall but never got the chance to do so. Trying to avoid having big sod clumps after working it. Just wanting to know if this is the way to go to break up hay land. Or am I wasting my money renting one of these out in the spring time..

Y-drops for corn?

Looking for feedback on this product. I talked with a company rep and it looks like a real good alternative to side bander. I would like to not apply any n before planting and put it all on with y drops at V6. The only problem i see is I do not farm flat ground and wonder how they follow the row when the corn plant is that small. I farm some heavy clay and worry that with a side bander the n would get stranded in the middle of the row for to long.

Oversize load / wide load corridor problems

So I was hauling oats today, when along came some oilfield equipment down the highway, was a massive structure headed for Ft.Macmurray. They forced me to back into a small ungraded driveway with a good slope to it. I didn't like it one bit, and expressed my concern, the flag person was quite forceful.

So I back into it with my tridem trailer, of course I got stuck! Also I tried to manoeuvre, and got the tractor tires pinned against the little acreage owners gate. Needless to say I was major F'd!

I was so pissed I jumped out and stood on the highway in front of the 100 something wheel rig slowly coming at me, either he stop, or I die like the asian kid at tiananmen square. Well he stopped, I told him they got me stuck, and he's not gonna pass until someone gets me out.

Well, not less then 0.5 minutes later, the 4 flag trucks drive back and up and are all ready for a fight! They yell and swear at me, tell me what a pos driver I was, what a pos truck I had and to for me to get bent, because they have a schedule to keep and getting stuck is my problem not theirs.

I held my ground, told them "yep, you're really nice guys I see!, this is not my fault, I would never have driven in there". They wanted to fight me, but I stayed calm and held my ground, none of them wanted to be the one to throw first, and risk the repercussion of the boiling rage I had within, obviously they could see I was far from happy.

Anyway, there was lots of dialog, and ridiculous ideas coming from them, regarding how i get unstuck so they can leave, and let me sit there. The funniest was one of them told me to just pin it, until the tires get hot, melt the ice and catch ground! I actually laughed at that, even though they all agreed with that dumb idea, to get me to crawl in the cab to let them go.

In the end they did pull me out, very angry, reluctant, and with little regard for my property. Did some damage to a rim and tire on the truck, as it was pinned against the gate loaded.

I am so tried of these wide load corridors, the oil and gas outfits are completely abusing them, instead of just using them for extreme cases, they are purposefully building stuff in Calgary, buy a cheap transport permit, then ship it up north just in the name of saving money for the company, with no regard to roads, safety, or the public. Sometimes up to a dozen loads a day are hauled on that one route alone.

A few years ago one flag person jumped out last minute, trying to stop my neighbour as he was loaded with wheat in a B-train, he didn't stop completely in the short distance (merely slowed down lots), so the flag person whacked his hood with their stop sign and drove off. He is an older fellow and didn't do anything about it.

Anyone else had an issue?

Do they have authority to make me go off the road and get stuck/damaged having no responsibility?

NH SP 580 Parallel arms

Got an SP 580 16 row planter. have to do parallel arms and bushings on it. Trying to deiced if I want to put air bags on. Titan Machinery's quote on the difference was around 2500 more for bags than just putting the arms and bushings in. The tech guy said I could control the air down pressure through the Pro 600. Has anyone else put the bags on one of these planters themselves? If so, how was it to get the Pro 600 to control the bags? P.S. a SP580 is the same as a 1240 CIH

Harvest without the pre-cleaner extension

Has anyone ever removed their 70 series or S series pre-cleaner extension to see if there was any improvement in cleaning capacity in corn? I just can't help thinking that performance has to improve if the corn can trickle down the shorter pre-cleaner and onto the front of the upper chaffer. It would have to be a more efficiency use of both wind and top chaffer area.

Cat mt855

Just about to take delivery of a cat 855. It's being trucked as I write. After leaving it running on the truck in temperatures of -20 and below two warning lights have come on. Both lights are for track tension, left and right . Is this a result of the cold and idling with thicker oil or is a sign of more serious problems. When I looked at the tractor and drove it before buying it all worked good.

Thanks

AGCO Massey 4243 questions

Hello I just t a 2000 model 4243 Massey tractor.

In the AGCO parts book they list green or blue tractor sections/series.

Doe this have something to do with age or series, dividing line 1997 to 1998, Green being latest model?

Also, brakes use mineral oil, where is a good place to find? $25.00 Jaguar oil per quart on the internet seems unreasonable.

Thanks

Lift axels on grain trailers not working

Our Wilson super bee has lift axels and they don't work most of the time, there is a way to bypass them completely but our local shop hasn't figured out what to do, I haven't had much time to look, and to replace the valves is 1400 bucks and apparently take a month to get in. Anyone have any insight on by passing lift valves or making them manual lift off a valve instead of automatic lifting?

airguard seed brake on flexi 5000

I am going to install airguard seed brakes on my flexi 5000 57' seeder. It is single shoot. Has an all run IAS blockage system on it. The blockage system has the ability to give % flow between each tower. The ends have lower flow than the center. Is this from slower flow? Not sure. I also have flown remote control copters over my fields with gopro on it. I noticed how uneven my seeder seeds. It will be interesting to see how and if these effect seeding. Any experience out there. Anyone using these with all run blockage systems. Just found out I need the screens to make the blockage system work. Do the screens keep the brakes working properly?

Oh possum

Shifted my 2188 out of the shed to get a tractor out that it was in front of when a possum who must have been inside somewhere commited suicide by running into the radiator fan. The fan blades are bent and a chunk of the fan cowling is gone but the radiator is intact.

Also stinking possum parts all over the place.

I'm looking for a second hand fan .Neils don't seem to have one. Does anyone in Aus know where to look, there must be plenty of these older headers being wrecked now.

Thanks

Laptop or Tablet?

I've got my big laptop loaded up with diagnostic software and technical information now and I'm thinking it might be time to protect it better and maybe avoid using it online so much so I've been thinking of getting a cheap laptop or tablet for my everyday computer.

For those of you that run tablets how do you like them for typing, surfing and such? To me it seems like an oversized smart phone and you loose half the screen to keyboard, I imagine you can buy wireless keyboards to run with tables, is that the case? Do any tablets have USB ports in them? If so I could run a wireless keyboard and mouse with a tablet, that would be good. Out in the field a tablet would be a little less awkward then a laptop I suppose. A decent tablet would cost more then a laptop also I think.

What's the preference for Tablets out there now, still the iPad? Windows or Android device? Is there larger tablets that are reasonably robust that you prefer these days?

Thanks.

656 Farmall

I have our 656 Farmall in the shop for its annual spa treatment and massage and found water in the hydralic/transmission system. My question is are there any spots that develop cracks where water can get into the system or other points that may loosen up and let water in? My first thought is to check the dipstick tube and dipstick itself for leaks as it seems the most obvious point that water may get in. Put it in the shop just before I came home so I have not actually looked for the problem yet so any ideas would be great.

dumping tandem truck into drive over auger with pup trailer

We are wanting to pull a pup trailer behind a tandem and for harvest time we are wondering how to dump the tandem truck into the drive over auger without spilling grain all over when the grain hits the pole/hitch on the pup trailer? has anyone made a deflector to get around hitch and then divert grain back towards center to get around hitch? what about a tail gate in the outside doors instead of the middle door with a pan on each side diverting the grain to grate on drive over auger? this setup gives a good tandem in spring to fill our seeder but payload similar to a super-b setup in harvest, just not sure how well it works in harvest. for the record we have no interest in using a semi/hopper trailer to fill our seeder in spring. we want a tandem truck for seeding time, but want larger payload for harvest so this is our best route. does anyone have any pictures of something they have done to overcome this spilling issue when dumping into drive over auger

N6

Someone will know this. My N6 is producing about 2100 psi at the auger raise position hydraulic ram. It is ok if the oil is cold but it struggles as the day wears.

The manual says it should be approximately 3000 psi. Could this be the problem? Now. If it is, is there a way to boost the pressure by tightening valve or is the pump retiring thought wear?

I would dearly love anyone's comments. Thank You.
