We finally had a decent rain. Driving around after I noticed that my one neighbour who uses a vertical tillage machine for his summer fallow and to prepare his seedbed still had water laying in his fields 2 days after the rain. The zero till fields only had a small amount of water lying in some low spots.
From what I have heard a multiple vertical till passes creates a hard pan and won't let water infiltrate. There was zero litter on top of the soil. I'm sure there is no soil structure left. Any larger soil aggregates that were there look completely pulverized. It is sad to see a valuable resource wash away like that.
Continuos cropping and zer till looks like it should pay off in this less than ideal year. I wish I would have started sooner.
