I have a weird situation with some aftermarket HID lights on a few different pieces of equipment, maybe someone will be able to help me.
I have some various HID lights, one is a DDM Tuning 55W HID light and the other is some brand I have no idea of, one of those "all in 1" HID lights where the ballast is the back part of the bulb.
Here's the weird thing, we bought the "all in 1" bulbs a couple of years ago for our 9760 combines since they didn't come with the overpriced JD HID package. These lights are better than halogen but they still provide a very yellow light. I bought the DDM HID quite a few years ago for our 9420, also ordered without the overpriced JD "Fieldvision" lights. Now I bought 4 and only used 3, so I have a spare. The 3 I installed in the 9420 quite a few years ago have worked flawless and they provide a much nicer light than the "all in 1" bulbs. They are 5000K bulbs so the light is very white where the "all in 1" ones are pretty yellow still.
Ok, essay aside here's the issue. On the 9420 the DDM lights have been working fine since I installed them. Today I took my spare DDM and replaced one of the "all in 1" HID's on the combine to see if there was a significant difference, which there is. So I am going to buy DDM HID conversion kits for the two combines, but that leaves me with 4 "all in 1"s that are kinda yellow but still better than halogen.
So I was going to install those in the fender lights on the 9420, so I plugged the one I took off the combine into one of the lights on the fender of the 9420 and it won't light up. It's weird because it worked fine on the combine 5 minutes earlier. So I took the DDM light off the combine and plugged that into the fender of the 9420. Same story, no light.
This was confusing since I have the exact same DDM HID's in the nose of the 9420 and they work fine. This lead me to try both of them, the DDM and the all in 1 in one of the light housings on our 4710 sprayer. Same there, the HID's will not light up.
So to try even further, I plugged both the HID's into the cab lights on our A400 swather. They lit up right away, no problem.
This is highly confusing to me. I'm assuming it's some sort of voltage drop or something due to the longer wiring but that doesn't really make much sense to me. Why do they work fine on the combines and the swather and even in the nose of the 9420 that originally just had a regular 9005 halogen bulb, but not on the back?
Wow, that was a long post... Is my only solution to run a power wire to the back of the 9420 and have the lights come on via a relay? I don't think I want HID light that badly.
