Never seen this before. Critters shaped like a slug, about 1/8" diameter and up to 1" long, two antenna's. brown colour and soft bodied, are eating strips into barley leaves. Patches are turning white the leaves are so shredded, no flag leaves left on some. Multiple slugs on each plant this evening. I recall seeing a few leaves with these chewed strips in years past, and never knew who was doing it, but never seen the plants destroyed before.
Searching online, I can't find much at all about slugs in cereals. The damage does match the description of cereal leaf beetle larvae, but they don't look the same. I am seeing a few in all cereals, but the worst damage is in the lower/slower developing areas of one field. Are they on their way everywhere else, or at the peak of their cycle by now? What are the control options? And why would slugs be doing so well on such a dry year, there is no moisture in the ground for significant depth?
Slugs? shredding barley leaves at flag leaf stage, what to do?
