Hmmmm, I thought I did this right, but I didn't.
I put a Raven 440 on my sprayer at the end of last year, the whole system: GPS speed sensor, flow meter, control valve, and the 440 controller itself. The controller was used, but in perfectly good condition, so I had to go through the set up. It's really straight forward and simple to understand. I drove a calibration mile, and it was 150 feet off. I made the correction, drove back, was perfect. All good. Went through the rest of the set up, for boom width, rates, valve and flow meter numbers, again, all straight forward and nice.
I decided to do a test run first with just water. I have a known area fairly straight and square 15.5 acres. I programmed 20 gallons per acre, and put 300 gal in the tank. I changed speeds several times, and I really love the thing! Like 2 seconds and it's right back on target regardless of what you do. And sure enough, when the total area read 15 acres, was exactly when I ran out of water. I was impressed with that part, however, I wasn't done with the field!
I decided to keep going, PTO shut off, but kept the controller going to measure my field by driving my pattern. Ended up being 17.8 A. I've measured the field a couple of different ways, and it's 15.5 pretty certainly, definitely not that far off.
I got to thinking it over, my overlap of my planter and sprayer pattern is "I think" to blame.
8 row planter, 45 foot sprayer. So the sprayer is covering 18 rows, and I was driving a pattern covering 16, the ratio is about right.
So the question is, what would you do? There is already 1/2 rate nozzles on the ends of the booms. I'm thinking, put a couple more 1/2 rate nozzles in, and reprogram the controller for 40 feet wide? Will that work out? I suppose I could also count rows carefully, and skip around the planter pattern covering 18 rows.
When I was thinking about this last year when I bought the sprayer, I figured I'd have a 6 row planter, not 8. So I always would have been driving in a planter pass, in the middle of 3 so to speak.
