700 series head on '94 R62

Is anything needed to make a 700 head fit a '94 R62 or is it just hook on and go? Thinking 30 ft would be the best fit (30-50 bu wheat and 60-80 bu sorghum).
May have 400-500 acres of milo to custom cut this fall, considering another machine as that could be a lot for the N6 by herself.

After Supper Project. (Pic)

Hello All
I always felt that we Canadians aren't as patriotic as our American neighbours. I always was wanting to put up a flag, but seemed to find an excuse not to, some more important work on the farm to do first. Well, I figure that I better lead by example. I was in town today & bought a flag. After supper I spent a bit of time head scratching (as usual, more time doing that than cutting & welding the steel) & settled on a design for a flag pole. Something simple & fast to build & take down when I need to. I finished putting it up just before dark, all ready for tomorrow.:54:

I hope that it'll be a bit windier tomorrow so that I can see if it's going to work!!!:running-around-smil

Boom ends 4920 alternative?

Just priced boom breakaway sections for my 4920 and after discovering that they are over $5000 each I got them welded up which appears to be holding at the moment.

Has anybody built there own ends or even the whole boom? Is there a reason they appear so much more substantial than nitros ?which look like a suspended boom with rhs to substitute cable.

Chaffer/Sieve area plugged

While installing the PFP enclosed discharge beater we noticed that
the front end of both the chaffer and sieve were plugged with straw
and chaff, I'd never seen this happen before.

I looked at used S series machines on a dealers lot and some of them
had the same condition.

Anyone else notice this and if so how do I avoid it.

Thanks,

park brake repair on 2594 HELP PLEASE!

Does anyone here have experience repairing the park gear on a 2594? All the linkages function properly right to the transmission, so its internal. When you put the shift selector into the park position it slides in with very little resistance, and will roll just like it is in neutral...

On a side note, what ticks me off is that it worked when i bought the tractor in the spring, and when my brother or hired hand used it, i told them to avoid using it all together (all our land is flat) but if needed, MAKE SURE IT IS COMPLETELY STOPPED BEFORE ENGAGING! And of course, next time i drive it, it magically does not work. Moral of the story... Don't trust others to run your equipment unless its 100% IDIOT proof.

Western Canada Combine Prices?

With this years drought in much of Alberta and Saskatchewan -- it seems like the dealers in this area are having a tough time selling new combines and as a result -- there isn't as many newer trades (2010+) out there as prior years.

Maybe the 20%+ exchange rate discount is a big factor as well?

Question is -- will combine purchase prices be lower this year than next year? On the plus side of things for a buyer -- lack of demand has certainly got to cut into dealer profit margins this year; but on the negative side of things if new combine prices are going to keep climbing, the used market prices might keep climbing as well?

Gleaner K2 Corn head

I just bought a low hour 1981 K2 with a 238 corn head. My planter and cultivators are setup for 30" rows. Will a 330 or a 430 head fit this combine? And if so what are the pros and cons to either head? I've seen some orange belly and black belly heads don't know the difference! Thanks

Auction Sale Prices

Are farm auctions starting to take abit of a hit because of conditions ? Was checking Kramers results (cause their's are the fastest to get into) and looks as if prices are starting to drop ! One sale in particular @ Watrous seemed to really suffer ! I wasn't there but maybe equipment condition was a factor ?? Crop conditions are probably the biggest factor , usually Neil can squeeze the loose change out of your pocket !!

Case 4894 groundspeed sender unit

Anyone know the location of the ground speed sender unit?
I have lost ground speed readout on the digital dash. When start key is initially turned on, the speed will show 0. When the speed readout button is pushed, 0 will turn to 40km, (presumably the maximum number the gauge can read to) then not change at all when moving.

Need help with 9600 wiring

Cut the bin full and shut separator off and swung auger out to dump. Unloaded grain bin and swung auger back in. Tried to kick separator in and no go. Had 71e code. Shut combine down and tried to restart. No go. Finally was able to short across starter and start machine. Engine ran fine. Was able to idle up. Gauges worked. Lights and A/C work. Header and reel height works. No separator engage. Can't start with key. Thought I would take it to shop and try to figure it out. Parking brake is engaged. Buzzer going off. Brake is locked. It is an early model with electric parking brake lock.Anyone ever had a similar problem? How did you fix it. Thanks for your help

Holy Smoke!

Fair amount of forest fires in western Canada right now. The nearest big one is about 70 miles from us but i think this is the smokiest I've ever seen it at home. Pictures are of the sun just before lunch, the North Saskatchewan River at Prince Albert, and pea field with fence line a half mile away just visible.

Wondering how it is in other places.

I bought a set of Awning plates from this guy selling LED lights at the Farm Progress Show. You can attach them without tools. I paid $699 plus GST for a set of 4 which seems like a lot but I think they are worth it. I hate installing and uninstalling the original factory cover plates.

Hello All
Scouting silage corn field to see what kind of job I did spraying, & found 1 plant growing through a piece of hollow stalk (last years volunteer canola that emerged late in the drowned out spots in my barley field). I plucked it off the top.

Not even noon, & I saved a corn. Yes,... shaping up to be a good day indeed. :54:

Efficient Wheat Harvest

Changing your APS/Preconcave grates for each crop is a great way to make your Lexion more efficient while improving threshing. Install Wheat grates for wheat and small grains, Soybean grates for beans, and Roundbar grates for corn and other crops for less damage and the best results. Find the right grate for your combine at HHSparts.com.

While you’re at it, check out additional products offered by HHS, like the HHS interchangeable concave. This concave allows you to change grates for different crops similar to how the pre-concave operates. The main concave consists of a rear section that is roundbar, and a front section that uses standard size APS grates that can be changed for different crops. The grates are easily changed in 20 minutes or less. Small grain (wheat) APS grates can be installed for wheat in the APS and in the main concave to give excellent threshing. Then, when it’s time for corn harvest, the grates can be easily changed to make the main concave and pre-concave full roundbar for excellent performance in corn, among other crops.
HHS carries APS Pre-Concave Grates, Impeller Wear Kits, Deck Plates, and other parts for Lexion Combines including the Interchangeable Main Concave.
Check out HHSparts.com for more information!

S67 capacity?

Today I cut a few acres with the S67 and 35' 9250 for the first time. I plugged the feederhouse in less than an acre and after that I found myself being quite timid with it. When I plugged the feederhouse I was going 4.5 mph and I hit a really good spot in a field that will likely average 40 to 45 bu/acre. If I were to take a wild guess, I would say the high yielding spot was maybe more like 60+ bushel wheat.

So now I'm trying to develop reference points in regards to how much capacity the machine has. First off, in dry wheat, how fast can you go and still cut the wheat off with new sickle sections? Can a guy sustain 6 mph in lower yielding wheat?

Next, how many bushels per hour can a guy expect in dry wheat if the yield is good enough that ground speed is not the limiting factor? Can you do 1500 or 2000 bu/hour in good wheat?

Will I likely experience rotor loss first or shoe loss?

I am not quick enough to analyze things in real time yet but I don't think the cylinder was anywhere close to plugging when the feederhouse plugged. Is that common?

Any tips for maximizing productivity for a totally new operator would be much appreciated. Thanks.

What tips to use for fungicide?

What does everyone else use for tips for spraying fungicide and what water rates do you use? First time doing or own crops as we got a high clearance sprayer this spring. Usually just do what an agronomist says and when he says to do it. What is the best timing to spray? Have some barley on barley that has some disease setting in. Should I just wait till the flag leaf or in head? Haven't done alot of fungicide before but now with or own sprayer it's a little easier to justify the cost without having to pay someone to do it.

Any Lindsay Fieldnet users on here with radio bridges?

Anyone from Quattro Farms on this forum, or anyone using Fieldnet? This weekend all of our older pivots (and off-brand) that don't have BOSS panels all dropped off fieldnet, all within about an hour. I can reset the power to the fieldnet control box on the last tower and it will talk again for about 12 hours before disappearing again. The problem is not in the Fieldnet bridge computer, nor is it a problem with the base station radio. All of our BOSS panels are still talking just fine.

From my experience in the IT world, this smells of a botched over-the-air firmware update of some kind. It only affects the end tower box units. I can't determine if it's the radio unit itself that hangs or something in the fieldnet control box computer (the radio has its own firmware that can be updated over the air I know that much--it's a standard MaxStream radio module). Just wondering if anyone else is suddenly having problems this weekend. Going to put in a call to their technical support line, and call our dealer tomorrow morning.

Raven viper pro in nh guardian no gps signal

Week ago put our sprayer away and everything worked fine. Got it out Friday to spray fungicide and had a problem. On the little black box( not sure what this component is called, but it has a little screen and four arrows under it ) under the viper monitor it said system ok and would indicate there was signal and the number of satellites. However. On the viper it says no gps. Wtf. So am I to assume we have gps signal and the viper isn't communicating with the black box, or do we have no signal.

I had a Trimble 500 antenna and cable, my tech says to try these they should work and see if that helps, no luck

I am training my hired guy to run the sprayer, I don't think he messed with any settings but you never know.

The only thing that comes to mind is when it was put away the key. Was left on and we had to boost the sprayer. Did we fry something

We are able to spray the rate control works. But we have no sectional control or auto steer. The only guidance we have is the drill marks. (50 ft drill 100 ft sprayer)

Also it records our speed on the viper I assume this is from the gps signal not radar

Anyways it's the weekend and I wanna get going again tomorrow

Any thoughts??

Pioneer Hybrid... a fall from glory.

Talked to a guy last night that does custom work for pioneer seed corn. The meeting he attended yesterday he was told that there are two parts to being a pioneer custom worker, safety and quality. The emphasis between the two is 60% safety and 40% quality. Just another step in the demise of what once was a market leader in hybrid technology.

Don't really get why DuPont is running pioneer into the ground. I said last March that I bet pioneer is not existent in 5 years, but I am not sure I give them that long.

Electric fence advice

So it's dry , the pasture is about toast and the cows area starting to lean on fences. One pasture I got a psycho Neighbor that phones constantly worrying the end of the world that will surely come if a calf squeezes through . The fence is old and is poor so I have an electric fence wire that is fully insulated on his side. When it gets dry like this they don't work so well. Any advice on making them work better when the ground is dry ? I'm wondering if pouring some water around the ground rods will help? Some of you Aussie ranchers must run into this problem?

A Few CDL questions...

Hello all,

I've had my CDL-A for a long time, but have never been on the road for as long as is required for working on a harvest crew. If I were to go next year, my DOT medical card would expire the end of July- what are my options? I've heard several conflicting reports.

Can I just renew it prior to leaving for the run, even though it would not be near expiration then?

Can I renew somewhere along the way, even though I'd be out of my home state?

Someone said that custom cutters don't even need medical cards?

Call reception is something the online reviews dont talk about. The dealers in saskatchewan have no idea of which phone has better reception. I just got a samsung 5 and is is much worse than my samsung note 3. My wifes iphone 5s is better than my samsung 5. In general are iphones better for reception? Would consider g4 or M9 also. Note 4 is my pick but too pricey. iphone 6 is too pricey also.

Need some advice from the Aussies, others free to help too

Okay, just throwing around a few ideas here, feel free too give suggestions. I am on the west coast of the Western Cape province of South Africa. Our soil type and climate is a lot like that of Western Australia, or at least it looks like to me. I am looking at renting some ground next year to do some cropping on.The ground I am looking at had wheat on it last year and nothing on it this year. If I can get the ground next year I want to plant some lupins on it and the next year barley or oats. Now for the big question - how to seed the lupins next year and what type of seeder?
The soil is light sand to a sandy clay type. If I can get the ground it will be from January next year so I cant do anything on it this year.
Do I get a tine type seeder or a disc type seeder?
Do I work the ground in Jan or Feb or plant directly into last years stubble?
I can get contract work for either type of seeder if I am done seeding

Rotary Header Speed

I just want to get everyone's opinion on how high I should be running my cutter bar rpm in alfalfa and grass. We usually run it around 1900 rpm in alfalfa and around 2300 rpm in grass, but everyone that I talk to runs it different than I do. Are there better ways than others to run it, or is it more just what the operator feels comfortable with and what he thinks does a good job? I am currently running the 500R John Deere rotary header, and last year I ran the Razor Bar Massey Ferguson header.
Rotary Header Speed

Not happy.

I replaced this fan bearing two years ago (harvest 2000ac per year), and it failed yesterday with 100yds of wheat left. The first time it went out, i caught it with play and replaced before incident. This time despite checking every morning, it just imploded.

Im tired of the cheap ass designs, cheap ass bearings, and no updates.

Wrecked the radiator, intercooler, fan, fan bearing, bearing housing, belt, tensioner pulley, and shroud. Im just waiting for the water pump to fail the minute we get it back running, so we can wipe out the motor just for good measure.

Last season it was the unloading auger. First the splines stripping in the horiz. auger. Then the entire pivot wearing out and cracking the support plates all down in the tank.

My point is, whats the use in spending another 100-200k or so to get into an S series, when all of the previous weak links still exist? Okay so it has nicer looking styling, quiter cab, a bunch of new convenient features....but now i have to deal with DPF, it STILL has a water pump that will seize up the motor when it fails, and has an auger that cant handle the load of the crop? Another one I can pretty much scrap at 1500 sep hrs.

I want to move to a different color so bad, but theres no dealer support. Get your act together competitors! You have a huge opportunity to take control of a market by simply expanding and offering quality, rather than throw away items with a short shelf life.

Pic wont work, just picture a fan wedged sideways between motor and radiator on a 9860STS.

And why ia it okay that these things can run 2300rpms all day but tractor motor data suggests 1900-2100 ideal operating range. Get rid of the buttons and give us a throttle, or at least an rpm limiter. Never been a fan of screaming a diesel motor that hard.
Not happy.

tx 68 won't engage header and unloading auger

Hello,
I'm new to the forum and got here due to having problems with a TX 68 combine harvester. I can't engage the header nor the unloading auger. If I switch these plugs (drum - with unloading auger) still nothing happens.

However if I put the plug from unloading auger / header to the drum valve, I can engage the drum from both auger/header buttons in the cabin. So this tell me the electrics work ?

I also can't engage manually any of the command by pushing the valve on the side - nothing happens. Am I doing something wrong here?

Any ideas please ?

Thank you!

Getting broke in on Gleaner ownership

The forum seems pretty slow lately so I thought I'd share how things are going with the Gleaner.

I bought a 2012 Gleaner S67 as well as a 2012 35' 9250 a few months ago. Wish I had bought a combine last fall but I wasn't mentally prepared for the leap at that time so I ended up with a lot of work to do in a short period of time.

So far I have:

1. Replaced worn out accelerator lugs with new orange lugs
2. Replaced rear feederhouse chain as well as drive sprockets and drive shaft bearings
3. Replaced the bearings on in the main separator clutch assembly
4. Replace several idlers and belts
5. Installed AgLeader yield monitor and auto-steer
6. Replaced cylinder bars on concave half of rotor
7. Took rotor in to get it balanced
8. Removed ceramic inserts in feederhouse clutch and unloader clutch
9. Replaced the scrapers in the clean grain elevator (hardware was loose)
10. New bushings in pivot pulley hub
11. Removed all three canvases on the draper and replaced center one. Will replace remaining 2 when a few small parts arrive (hopefully tomorrow)

I think I'm missing a few things. For as short as that list is it's amazing how many man hours my emotes and I have into it. I could do each of those things in half the time or less now that I know how to do them but it's been a pretty steep learning curve.

I'm guessing I've had 30 acres of my poorer wheat ready to go for several days. The rest of my wheat is likely not ready to go and likely won't be ready for a few days. I'm cutting it pretty close on getting ready but hopefully next year will be easier with more familiarity and the whole winter to work on it.

I'm hoping things will work well this harvest but I have my concerns despite putting lots of parts and labor into this deal. I have had to make some compromises on what I can get done versus what I want to get done so there are some areas of the machine that I have not analyzed as thoroughly as I would have liked. I should know more in a couple of days when I'm in the field:)

rear wheel offset on Miller/H-h front boom

Hi all, I noticed my rear wheel are offset about 2 inches to the right compared to the front wheels. Machine is a N-H Sp 240F with 4 wheel steer. 4 wheel steer locked and the offset is making the machine running at a very small angle. I thought when it was locked it didn't have the choice to be straight. How do I adjust that?

Thanks

Should I get rid of my 5710

Not sure why everyone bad mouths the 5710 and mrb's. I have a tough time seeing how a half million dollar drill will pay for itself. I've demoed independent opener drills beside my 20 year old drill and the field looks prettier at the start, but in the end they don't fill the bin any more than my supposed boat anchor.

Feeding systems

Reports on feeding down south on the custom run are terrific as long as feeder mods are complete, headers are set up proper, and normal wear and tear adjustments are maintained properly. Can't hardly wait for canola up north. Headers have to be set up right for canola and if you run MacDon built 4200 we have shock kits built to stabilize the floating auger. Looks like very good reports will be coming there also.

Biggest tires on a NH/Miller front boom?

Just getting some pricing, it seem my dealer only runs shorter floater tires on the NH machines they sell. I'd like to go with a taller tire, the NH can run a 380/105R50(about 80" tall) skinny tire so I wonder if there is any reason I couldn't run a 800/55R46 or a 710/70R42? Anybody got experience with this? Is there clearance issues?

Turbo Chop Problem on 2012 760

Anybody have problems with spread width with a turbo chop? We can only get 35ft. at the most, in soybeans it is unable to get much past the back tires; it has been worse then the MAV on our 590. Neighbors had a 2012 760 like ours with same problem and when they traded to 2013 780 they could get 40+ with the turbo chop. Dealer has no clues, they have worked with it. Is it possible for RPM on power spreaders to be less than it is showing on the CEBIS?
The chaff spreader is excellent, but the spread on the turbo chop is poor. Any ideas?

New guy, looking to change career paths

Hi,

I'm currently an adult college student living in midcoast Maine, but previously was a full time farm hand. I started working part time on a strawberry farm when I was 14, graduated to doing basic equipment work by 16, and after high school spent a number of years as an assistant grower on a small scale fruit and vegetable farm. From there I moved to a small dairy farm milking, feeding and doing fieldwork. During that time I also worked for a grain farmer, mostly planting soybeans and wheat, doing tillage work and driving trucks and grain cart during harvest. In 2005 I moved to Maine to purchase a dairy farm, but was unable to get financed. I continued to work on a few small dairies until 2011, when I moved into other work. (mostly retail and trucking.)

Though I'm about a third of the way through a BA in History, I'm finding that I really miss agriculture, and would like to go back to it. By this time next year I will be in a position to move pretty much anywhere, but I'm not really sure where to begin looking. Ideally I would like to find a long-term, full-time, stable job on a crop farm, perhaps one that also raises beef or other animals. Stability and an opportunity to become part of a rural community are top priorities for me. I have a Class A license, equipment experience (though not combine) and used to have a pesticide applicator's license, though it's long expired.

The difficulty is that I have zero experience with auto-steer, gps or computerized equipment. The newest equipment I was running was a JD 8220 with grain drills, but the "computer" system was pretty basic. I don't expect I'd have any trouble learning the newer systems. I also lack combine experience- I've run a JD 9550 a little bit, but not enough to really know what I'm doing, and that experience is also a number of years old.

Given that my experience is older and missing some important things, I would be willing to work for a reduced wage for a season as "on-the-job training" if that's a possibility. Obviously I'm starting this process way early, given that I'm not free to move until next spring/summer, but I'd welcome any advice anyone might have.

FYI- I'm a US citizen, Maine CDL holder, looking only to work within the US. Especially interested in Kansas/Nebraska/Minnesota/Iowa. 34 years old now.

I'd welcome any suggestions for how I should proceed.

Thanks,

Screven

Broken AFS Pro 600

The touch screen on my AFS PRO 600 from my CASE 8010 got broken and because I couldn't find a new touch screen to replace it, I bought a used Intelliview II Plus monitor. jd 65 combine and jd r?

Hi guys im in the process of restoring my grandfathers jd model r. Now i've just purchased a square back 65 combine to go behind it. The one my grandpa had was an engine driven model. I believe it was an earlier roundback model. Now my question is, will the r have enough power to run it with the pto? i cant find much info on it, only newer deeres on them. (70's, 720's) The most work it will do is an afternoon. I think it would be pretty neat to see it running beside 3 sts's.
Thanks,Shawn

What to buy

I am currently running a 2188 and a 1470 for combines. I really want to go to one machine. I farm 1900 acres. What do I buy? It has to be red or green since there are no other options in my area. I like the looks of the JD 9750 or 9760 machines. Will one of those replace the ones I am currently running? I am also looking at some 8010 models.

Improving Profitability

Just wondering if anyone has any experiences on how they improved profitability on your farm, especially if you cannot expand by getting more land.

I am pretty much stuck at the 2 sections I have. Stuff for sale is $3000 per acre and a lot of big guys have the rental market cornered. I grow Ok crops but have been leery to really throw the inputs at it. I have been content growing 25 bu flax, 35-40 bu canola, 45 bu wheat/peas and 25 bu lentils.

If I could add 5-10 bu on those numbers could make a big difference, or I could just lean on my equity and find some totally different venture to diversify my income. Got a lot of free time in the winter but please don't mention cows. I've done a little low scale stock trading here and there but its just coffee money right now.

Louisiana or Traeger grill?

Our Barbecue has all but bit the dust. It was a premium unit when we got it and lasted 8 years, I guess I should be happy about that? So the two units that have the most appeal to me are the Traeger and Louisiana grills. They are both pellet grills and are apparently harder to burn food with.

For those of you with experience, which do you think is the better unit? Also an average sized unit seems to be tipping the scales at $900 or so, any advice where the best deal is? TIA

Grew red lentils this year and let's say I wish I would of not.. Crop looks ok but has started to flower and only 6 inches tall..

I have no clue how much taller it will get but have been told it will be a b1tch to get off the header..

Anyone know of a good air reel or air assist that will blow the lentals off the knife..

What is the best head and size to run for picking them up, been told the 35 foot auger head with air reel does best job

Thanks for the info

Rain/Season australia 2015

Hows it all going for everyone here in mallee SA had a good start crops in at reasonable time frame stored all the summer rain in theory.
Since mid may rain has been marginal but just enough, like last week 3 falls of around 2mm each last night presume another 2mm possibly just need a soaker like WA got over weekend.
Crop growth is quite slow due temps I guess last Friday here was 8 degrees at 3 oclock in afternoon after a peak at midday of about 12.
Livestock feed is minimal.

Father used to tell me "some of the worst years come from the best starts"

Last 15 years a average spring or better has happened twice was hoping to break the cycle this year.

So in a nutshell going ok could be worse could be better just waiting for a big fall to replenish things

PT suspended boom for high clearance

I searched and a couple years ago there were some guys using them. Are you still happy with them or have you updated to SP.
I like the large tank of a PT and only crop 700 acres so it's hard to justify a big payment. I'm debating either a suspended PT or a 3630 to 4640 spray coupe but I'm not sure if the 2wd will screw me (next year when it rains).

First Time with Raven 440 Controller

Hmmmm, I thought I did this right, but I didn't.

I put a Raven 440 on my sprayer at the end of last year, the whole system: GPS speed sensor, flow meter, control valve, and the 440 controller itself. The controller was used, but in perfectly good condition, so I had to go through the set up. It's really straight forward and simple to understand. I drove a calibration mile, and it was 150 feet off. I made the correction, drove back, was perfect. All good. Went through the rest of the set up, for boom width, rates, valve and flow meter numbers, again, all straight forward and nice.

I decided to do a test run first with just water. I have a known area fairly straight and square 15.5 acres. I programmed 20 gallons per acre, and put 300 gal in the tank. I changed speeds several times, and I really love the thing! Like 2 seconds and it's right back on target regardless of what you do. And sure enough, when the total area read 15 acres, was exactly when I ran out of water. I was impressed with that part, however, I wasn't done with the field!

I decided to keep going, PTO shut off, but kept the controller going to measure my field by driving my pattern. Ended up being 17.8 A. I've measured the field a couple of different ways, and it's 15.5 pretty certainly, definitely not that far off.

I got to thinking it over, my overlap of my planter and sprayer pattern is "I think" to blame.

8 row planter, 45 foot sprayer. So the sprayer is covering 18 rows, and I was driving a pattern covering 16, the ratio is about right.

So the question is, what would you do? There is already 1/2 rate nozzles on the ends of the booms. I'm thinking, put a couple more 1/2 rate nozzles in, and reprogram the controller for 40 feet wide? Will that work out? I suppose I could also count rows carefully, and skip around the planter pattern covering 18 rows.

When I was thinking about this last year when I bought the sprayer, I figured I'd have a 6 row planter, not 8. So I always would have been driving in a planter pass, in the middle of 3 so to speak.

Sorry for the long post. Just wanted to go through what I've thought of.

Looking for help in getting a good 4yr rotation in place

Don't have much experience farming yet and All I've ever known is wheat and canola but would like to get into a better rotation to maybe help with disease. Everything is grown under irrigation in southern alberta.

I've been searching around on Google and haven't found much, I've noticed that lots of different crops can get sclerotia (sp) such as canola and flax? And is it even worth trying if your neighbours don't rotate or rotate very little?

So I was just wondering what works well for anyone that try's to space the rotation out? I'm trying out some faba beans this year so we will see how it works out.

Multiple VT passes vs 0Till after heavy rain

We finally had a decent rain. Driving around after I noticed that my one neighbour who uses a vertical tillage machine for his summer fallow and to prepare his seedbed still had water laying in his fields 2 days after the rain. The zero till fields only had a small amount of water lying in some low spots.

From what I have heard a multiple vertical till passes creates a hard pan and won't let water infiltrate. There was zero litter on top of the soil. I'm sure there is no soil structure left. Any larger soil aggregates that were there look completely pulverized. It is sad to see a valuable resource wash away like that.

Continuos cropping and zer till looks like it should pay off in this less than ideal year. I wish I would have started sooner.

How fussy do you get on spray mixes?

I was mixing chemicals and noticed they don't necessarily work out exactly even.
I got to thinking about a couple of things, when Deere first come out with a SP sprayer the tank was 750 gallons I think it was. A neighbor would bitch how come not 800 so a tank does 1/2 a quarter like it was such an insurmountable problem to simply put on slightly less total product so it works out.

About 20 years ago Norm MacDonald was doing Weekend Update on Saturday Night Live.
One bit went like this:
Scientists have discovered
that 3 ounces of milk and 3 ounces Special K is a good dietary source of protein.
However, 4 ounces of milk and 3 ounces of Special K is DEADLY POISON!

Often simile at that when I'm agonizing over spray mixes.

Clearfield canola and ares herbicide

So my canola is at multiple stages this year, with frost and poor germination being the main causes. I've been fortunate enough to get a few small showers to get most of my remaining seeds germinated. My canola is anywhere from pre bolt to just emerging.

So my question is....how hard is ares on canola in the cotyledon stage? Anyone have experience with this?

What's the lesser of 2 evils? Spray cotyledons or spray a few plants that are in flower?

dad...

since its fathers day I thought I would give mine a thanks/praise.

I wont ever be able to fill my fathers shoes. He was a teacher, mentor, role model of how to be loving, tough, gentle, human, man of the earth, man of the church and of the community. He taught me to work hard, treat others kindly, love of life and have to laugh once in a while. I look at all the things he accomplished and I listen to when people around town talk about him and it makes me proud to be his son.

I think about the future and someday he wont be here any more. that is going to be a very hard time for me because now in life he is one of my best friends.

both my folks worked hard and did a great job of raising two wonderful men and one spectacular, handsome, amazing, generous, smart son.

I remember times when he had to get after us kids. you could see the hurt in him as he had to bring the pain.

they made it through the 80's when banks were pulling fast ones around here. they managed to keep the farm without letting us kids know how much struggle they were going through. and they managed to put us 3 boys through college.

Dad milked the cows and then went to his full time job only to come home to milk and do evening chores. between the 2 full time jobs and 3 kids he still managed to be on the city council or mayor of our city for most of my life. I don't think he missed many lions club meetings or events. He is also made it to 4th degree level in the Knights of Columbus. basically means for a lifetime he rarely missed a meeting and was always helping at events. The church is very grateful for all the things grandpa and dad have done for it over there lives. you cant go hardly anywhere in rock creek or pine city without his work being somewhere.

when they were milking the folks earned a wall of awards from land o lakes for quality and production.

even now at 71 years old he still runs a full time repair shop.

it makes a guy proud to be known as "skips boy" around town. for many years I didn't think anyone knew my first name. lol
the one picture is a guy brought this old john deere 440 two cylinder dozer. it had a bad head gasket and wouldn't run smooth and had a hard time turning left. he had it purring like an kitten. he was just have to much fun to simply hear it run. he drove it around the yard several times, parked it and then drove it 1 more time!
I bought the 8450 from my uncle, it was broke down and he didn't want to fix it. so we got it for scrap price and fixed it up. dad loves it, I am trying to go no till but I cant keep him and the mulch master out of the fields!! there will be a rut and he will be out there in a flash in the spring to touch that area up.

I had to work out of town for 3 years. he was there to help the wife and nephew do the field work. he is always there to come to my rescue when I am doing field work and need a hand.
he still loves doing hay. when I was young I remember the farm mags coming out to do an article on us. I got the 4020 up and running and he just loves that little tractor. so smooth and easy to drive.
he loves them steers, the pic is of the wife and him having a little meeting.
he babys them steers.

he has two daughter in laws. you know how proud he is of them and how much he cares for them two girls when you go somewhere and dad has already told a proud dad story about them.

It is a lot of combines to sell in a soft market. Not sure if it is going to drive the price down or attract a whole lot of new buyers because there are so many to choose from.

Sprayflex, Rite-Height, Ag Leader Review

I have a Fieldstar 1500 Sprayflex 120ft mounted on a 06 IH 4300. It has an Agleader Integra monitor, sectional control and Ontrac3 steering. I just installed a Rite-Height auto height system.

I am happy with my sprayer. 35 mph loaded road speed and 50 mph empty is great for getting to and from the field. The sprayer is smooth in the field and has ample power. I did damage a boom this spring because of operator error. A quick call to my dealer and then to Jay at Sprayflex and I was able to get my parts. With there modular boom design it was easy to unbolt the damaged section and replace. I found it great to be able to get ahold of the guy who builds the equipment.

The Agleader electronics have been good as well. Any trouble that I had with install, setup, or operation were handled by my dealer or Agleader tech support. They have very good tech support. The monitor is easy and intuitive to use.

I just put on the Rite- height auto height system as I found myself watching and adjusting the boom height way too often. It works ok. I think my boom height is more consistent with it. My boom wheels touch about the same amount as when I would run it myself. I found the install fairly simple once I had how the hydraulic system figured out. A call to Greentronics and Sprayflex on last Saturday did the trick. I wasn't expecting to get a hold of anyone but I did. Great customer support. For half the price of the other auto height systems it was well worth it.

I added a set of Timbren RES001 to the suspension of the sprayer and they are working well. If anyone hasn't heard of them. Check Timbrens out.

I'm waiting on my Violet Lechler IDKT twin nozzles to try out. Compact twin nozzle that fits in a normal cap. Hopefully I get them installed before I'm done spraying in crop.

I also deleted the egr on the DT466E by adding a couple aluminum blocker plates. The hp went up for sure and the engine runs cooler now. My oil should stay cleaner longer too. Very simple task to complete and inexpensive.

Grease guns in cold weather

Anybody have any suggestions about what is the best grease gun for using in cold weather?

When I say cold, I mean anything from about 20 degrees Celcius down to freezing.

I am talking about manual grease guns, not electric or air operated.

I have the current model MacNaught K29, and while it is a little better than the old model, it still isn't much use in cold weather. Here it is - Macnaught - articles

The MacNaught sales reps at field days say that nobody has problems with the grease guns in cold weather. The MacNaught online contact says there has been no complaints since the updated model has been out.

I am currently using Caltex Liplex EP2 grease. I tried Caltex Delo EP2 grease but it was even worse. Mobil XHP222 was a waste of time. BP Energrease LC2 was not too bad, but it is very hard to get in this area, no distributors.

A neighbour has a Alemlube grease gun which works better in cold weather, but looks rather flimsy and may not last very long.

The MacNaught K29 is rather sturdy and well made. But it just doesn't do its job in cold weather.

Anybody else have trouble greasing in cold weather?

Anybody have any suggestions about other brands?

Envizio Pro/Smartrax issue?

Hi guys.

Having an issue with my Envizio Pro in a 7650 Coupe when doing a headland on a pie shaped corner. I will be locked on and steering on lets say the right side of the wedge and when I get to the spot where the left and right swaths intersect it will jump to the left swath. I don't see why it's switching when I'm locked on a swath already. Not sure if that makes sense?

It's very annoying and has nearly put me in the bush and power poles a couple times. I can't find anything about it in the manual.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Miller Nitro/Raven section control problems., Help! Please

I was out streaming 28% yesterday and on the first pass section 2 and 5 started intermittently turn on and off but neither at the same time, sure glad I am not spraying something as it would be a mess so here's the kicker according to the screen all is well sections on the screen paint even though they are not on. So I just hooked up the fence row cords to the problem valves and set them on auto so I can shut them off with the master switch.

So I start in on the wiring this morning since we got a good rain last night, I found the harness was rubbing on the cab suspension shock, push it out of the way and got stabbed by wires, ah ha must be the prob, nope but I did find out why the hazard lights don't work and why sometimes it won't start and I leave the cab and come back it starts right up. So I dig some more found a broken wire on the section control harness, well this should fix it right? Nope it was actually a diff section, have no idea how it could have still been working.

I have been trying to trace wires, thanks miller for cutting every possible corner on the electrical system and putting basically the entire wiring system in one harness , I still am trying to understand the accuboom part of it, switched power must some how go to the node first and than to the valves right? I switched nodes with no luck, I was understanding that where it T's into the main harness I could unhook it and go direct but had no luck with them 2 valves but then I am really confused how it knows I have them sections on even though I have no switched power.

I am starting to pull my hair out any help would be much appreciated

Corn heads for Jd 7300

Good afternoon everyone

We have been running a new to us jd 7300 for four seasons now, and have the chance to chop around 7 acres of corn from a demo plot, hopefully it's actually gonna grow... We had been planning on just redneck swathing it somehow and using the pickup, just to say we did it and to see how well it can grow in our sand

But if it yields at all, maybe some corn should be in our future? If we did grow some consistently, what are the model numbers of row heads for this vintage? It seems much easier to find rotary/kemper units, but not sure we're that serious yet ;) heck, not even sure if we're serious about corn in general, but thought I'd try to figure this one out: what kind of header should I be thinking about? 6 row or 8 row? Jd or something else with an adapter?

Any input is appreciated

Claas & hay

After NH time I have now a jag -08 870. Equipment list says there is a v12 chopping cylinder 4-17mm. I think 17mm is very short and I´d like to do longer chop. Claas has v20, v24 and v36 drums. What idea? Only for maize? My friend said rock stop works better when feed rollers rolls slowly. So, do I have to take some knives away for doing longer chop and keeping rockstop at work? At NH FX I had 6 knives and chop lenght was 30mm. That was what I´m looking for. Sorry my bad english. :/

Agco 5156 baler issues

I have been having some issues with my 2008 Hesston 5156 baler. First being the outsude belts have nearly cut through the density arms, I welded them up, but belts should not rub being everything is aligned and belt tension is good. Second trouble is with mesh wrapping on rollers, especially the top roller in the tailgate. I clean them off, sometimes it will bale for days with no problem, other times it will bale 3 or 4 then spit one out with no wrap on bale and all of it on a roller. Anyone have suggestions. Baler has 4000 bales thru it.

Alpine G22 vs dry Phos

This topic has been beat to death before but I am setting up a new to me drill and I am considering using Alpine as part of my Phos. Is there any long time users of Alpine out there that have been keeping close tabs of their soil levels of Phos? I think there is some advantages to G22 which are injecting innoculant into stream and it's also very compatible to micros. Users of Alpine that I have talked to also claim they see a quicker start to their crops over using dry. Disadvantages I see would be cost and handling and applying both liquid alpine and dry Phos if dry is also needed. I would like to hear others opinions on this.

Conservitive Bailout

The pension rules are changing for federal MPs. After the next election you have to be 65 to collect the pension. Now you need 7 years elected or so, and pension starts when you "retire" from Ottawa. So a bunch of MP's will bail as it is worth a million plus to not run, and you can still be in Ottawa with a part time job generated from your contacts. All most as good as being a Senator.

J.D. 4650 MFWD mechanical question

My J.D. 4650 MFWD has an oil weep coming from a 2"steel end cap, located just above where the output shaft to the front diff exits the transmission. The cause is a bad o-ring seal(s), on what I understand to be the PTO clutch shaft at the front support bearing. Is there a quick and easy trick to replacing that seal?

HELP!!! I Can't Stand the Buzzing!!!

We have a 2006 9660 STS. We have had issues with the feed accelerator light/buzzer coming on. There is nothing wrong with the feed accelerator. The issue is when you slow the rpm's up with the header engaged, all the lights go on and the buzzer sounds like it should. But when you then speed the machine up just the feed accelerator light stays on with the buzzer on. And it stays on, and it stays on. You can shut the machine down and restart everything back up, but that one light and buzzer stay on. Ok.... so no one likes to cut wheat with this buzzer going off!!! That will drive a guy nuts after 30 min. I have replaced the sensor which is on the left hand side of the machine. No luck. I have tried to adjust the sensor so it is the right distance from the shaft. No luck. We have had the electronic board with all the lights and buzzer replaced. No luck and a lot of money out of our pocket. Has anyone had this problem? Does anyone know of a solution to this problem? Thanks in advance for any thoughts!

Singles or duals

We have duals on our 72 and we are considering trading up to a newer machine. We think we want duals but there are a lot of 77's out there with singles. What our some opinions on pros and cons of duals versus singles? Duals are more stable I would think. Biggest concern would mud. We would have RWA and we run a 35 foot 9250 header.

Tractor or Sprayer?

The dilemma of a small farmer - how to best spend capital.

I run 1250 acres just a few miles of Regina. It was all the land I could grab before the BTOs crowded me out. So with that land base I have had to make a few compromises. I currently run a small 34' Bourgault 5710 drill on a 8570 JD 4WD. Works well for the investment. I use my older 8430 4WD to pull a Case SRX 160 sprayer because the SPs are were out of my budget at the time. The PT sprayer is very simple, low maintenance and has a nice 1600 gallon tank, but it has limitations as well. Not as nimble in the field, bit tough to spray in higher crop.

Now after a few years I can afford to inject some cash into equipment but I am uncertain as to the best bang for the buck. The choice is to keep the seeding outfit I have and buy a sprayer, or send the 8570 to pull the sprayer and upgrade the seeder tractor and drill.

Any suggestions?

Miller/NH with Greenstar?

Its been said on here that you can put a Deere 2630 in a NH/Miller front boom sprayer, anybody know how/if this works? Are you simply ordering Raven components and then the Deere screen is acting as a virtual terminal? I have a raven steering controller with Deere 2630 in my NH T9 tractor and it works like factory Deere autosteer, wonder if its the same? Anyone doing this?

Any one know of a product to add to the tank mix with roundup that will keep the screens clean. There is a buildup of white residue on the screens after spraying a few loads, worse if it sits for a day.

High rent

I notice on this forum a article written from the US stating the dropping of rental acres because of a soft farm economy. Wonder whats different up here? Grain prices are pretty depressing except for canola, and the only reason I've been swinging a profit in the last couple of years is because of yields. Now with no rain in forecast and the outlook for poor yields I'm thinking that will change. I don't rent any land other than 1 quarter on a share basis.....and thought about cashing it out because of the high share, but that has changed. 25% of #%$% all is nothing. I don't understand how $80 rent adds up?? Even on good land that's a lot to throw at the land lord, considering the costs to put it in. For me canola cost me about 90 fert, 20chem, 55seed, 25 fungicide, add some tech fees and other crap and its 200 plus without any equipment cost. I had one guy tell me he was into his whole farm average at about 370 per acre! And I'm guessing that's not far off with a big rent. I find that a lot of guys in the 10k acre club don't carry crop insurance, say the bill is too high for the coverage, just wondering how that adds up. I'm thinking that the whole province won't be affected by this drought, but here it is getting pretty bad and its starting to become stressful for most of us involved.

Lets hope the forecasters get it right for once with the long range, cause my 7 day forecast right now is for 60% chance of rain on Tuesday, that'll change to a sunny logo on Monday.

Canada Farm show air tanks

Looked at all the drills and tanks. 100 footer not big enough for me so gonna wait until they come out with something decent.:)
Cant really get prices at a show like that so hard to compare. Kind of tired of the BG augers for metering. Probably like hawk best if the thing would work how it is supposed to. The icon monitor seems ahead of topcon and raven but is that true? Interesting seeing the master engineers studying the hawk

The hawk rep was very honest and said they have lots of bugs now. They have stalled production until they can figure out some things.

Even for the smallest seedhawk the company recommends a min of 60 gal/min of oil and the rep said 70 preferred. Its a small percentage of (older)tractors have that and I think its bad engineering. Run at least one circuit off the ground or whatever.

At least pillar uses springs. Conservapak used to but I see they have hyd on each opener now too. Sort of like JD sprayer suspension. The air ride works well but the caseih springs give equal ride with simply a coil spring.

What kind of insect is this?

Hope this is a half decent picture, there are these fly type things, tried looking on Google all evening and can't find anything. Looks kind of like a wasp, minus the stinger and the fact that they are more grey/black. I'm also color blind so that don't help much either haha.

They are in the faba beans, have canola right beside it and can't seem to find any in there. Im in southern alberta

Thanks in advance!

Big things coming....

Well I had an interesting week. Was in Kansas City at the hospital with my family waiting on my new nephew to arrive. But while out in the waiting room we started talking with another family out there waiting as well and one of the guys works at the Agco plant in Hesston. Right now he says he works primarily in the baker division right now but has also worked with the planters and Gleaner combines. He didn't give me too much info but he said there's two new Gleaner prototypes in development right now. He did give me the project names but I don't feel in should share them at this point, but I'm sure some others have heard by now anyway. But as he said these things are "some big sum bitches!" So this could be interesting to see what Gleaner may have for us down the road. But it's good to hear news like this for Gleaner. Sometimes I feel like Agco is just letting Gleaner get a bit "stale"...

If this crop turns out as good as it looks I think its time to walk away from my Miller Nitro 4365.

I called up a Hagie sales person the other day and wow do they have good sales pitch.

There is a good share of things I like about them but I really want to know how they hold up, how the parts department is, and everyones thoughts on the ride and overall simplicity.

The sales guy told me to give him a call in advance and they would fly me to the factory to take a peek, got to admit I thought that was pretty cool, didn't even get a cap from the last guys I bought a new piece of equipment from.

Thanks in advance

Fine cut chopper replacement knives

Need some advice on replacement knives and kit. I've read the positive comments on the Rodono chopper but I'm going to stick with my fine cut.

1. Dealer parts guy has a 4.5mm knife kit and a ~7mm knive kit. I assume that the thicker knife kit is the newer kit?

2. The 7mm knife kit is almost double the cost of the older kit? Does this sound right?

3. Now that guys have used the newer thicker blades a few years is this the way to go or will the older knife kit be ok? What are the advantages of the thicker knife?

4. I think I have the older knives on now...combine is fairly new to me so I'll have to go in and double check.

5. For replacing are they replaced from the stop sign side? Does the rotor need to come out?

TIA.

Door unloading bins

I'm needing to add more storage this year and was wondering what the largest bin that a person could unload through the door safely?

I currently have 14' and 19' bins and am needing to add roughly 45000bu this year. I've been looking at going with one big bin or two smaller ones and also I've been looking at 5600bu hopper bins but gets pricy. If a person didn't need the unloader then that would bring price down. Paired row vs single row openers?

I'm wondering if anybody is running single row openers on 12" spacing on a conserva pak or seed hawk on their cereals? My fear is this won't be enough stubble to hold the swaths up off the ground. Grower surveys (Australia)

There are a few grain buyer surveys doing the rounds at the moment, asking farmers what crops they are growing and acreages, and offering "be in to win the draw" type incentives for anyone who obliges.
Please do yourself and other farmers a large favour by not obliging.
This information simply gives buyers more power to manipulate prices and will cost you money at harvest time.

Boom Nozzle Lights

Hi

I thought you might find these photos of interest of sprayer booms being illuminated with LED lights over here in the UK.

The first image details the light pattern from one N4408 40W LED light with a Pencil Beam back lighting the sprayer pattern. The second photo is of one N4402 50W LED with Wide Flood lens mounted behind the cab illuminating a 30m boom.

The lights are manufactured by Nordic Lights.

Thanks Graham

sowing into pasture

Seen some info on sowing strait into long term pasture as no till (not doing any form of tillage). Has anyone had anything to do with this? may look into this for next year on a small field. thinking prep work would involve spray topping this year summer spraying and a good knockdown next year for weeds. also higher sowing rates and a bit more p and n.

Need info on silage bales

So with the lack of hay I am looking at feed options to get through the winter. Years ago I used to put up silage but got tired of the labour involved .

Do you put up baled silage and if so how do you do it. I have barley that I can cut and bale. Can use my haybine and new holland BR 780 baler ? I assume I would need to find a bale wrapper .

Any info you can pass along is appreciated.
